Pennsylvania Cerebral Palsy Lawyers

Cerebral Palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain. The exact cause of Cerebral Palsy is still unknown, as our knowledge of the brain is very acute. Cerebral Palsy can occur during pregnancy (75%), during childbirth (5%) or after birth during development up to the age of three (15%).

Cerebral Palsy is divided into four major classifications to describe the different movement impairments caused by the injury:

  • Spastic most common (70-80% of all cases)
  • Athetoid/Dyskinetic (10% of all cases)
  • Ataxic (40% of all cases)
  • Mixed

Causes of Cerebral Palsy during birth include:

  • Asphyxia
  • Hypoxia of the brain
  • Birth trauma
  • Premature birth
  • Infections in the mother during birth (strep, central nervous system infections, placenta abruption, among others)
