Philadelphia Paralysis AttorneysParalysis is when a baby suffers a loss of muscle function in part of their body. It results when something is wrong with the way messages are conveyed between muscles and the brain. Paralysis can be complete, or it can be partial. It may occur on one or both sides of an infant's body, and may occur in just one area, or it may be widespread. In babies, paralysis is most commonly caused by spina bifida. There are three different forms of the condition; in myelomeningocele, the most common type and the most severe, the spinal nerves and the meninges go through the open part of the spine, causing nerve damage and other serious disabilities. As a result, a person may suffer from varying degrees of paralysis; spine damage; cognitive difficulties; absence of skin sensation; poor or loss of bowel and/or bladder control; and more. Cerebral palsy is another condition that relates to paralysis that an infant may suffer, and can involve both brain and nervous system functions, such as hearing, learning, movement, seeing, and thinking. There are several different forms of cerebral palsy, and it can be mild, or it may be severe. The condition may only involve one side of a baby's body or it may involve both sides. It may be more prominent in either the arms or the legs, or it may involve both the arms and the legs. Erb's palsy is the birth injury paralysis of an infant's arm that results from an injury to the upper group of the main nerves of the arm, called the brachial plexus nerves, which provide feeling and movement to the arm, hand, and fingers. Erb's palsy causes temporary or permanent paralysis in the affected area. Most often, Erb's palsy is the result of an infant suffering a difficult birth, such as shoulder dystocia.
