Pennsylvania Erb’s Palsy Lawyers

Erb’s Palsy occurs when 1 or all 5 of the main nerves that supply movement and feeling to the arm are damaged during birth. Erb’s Palsy can be caused by:

  • Dystocia
  • The infant’s head/neck are pulled to one side while the shoulders are in the birth canal
  • Excessive pulling on the shoulders during a normal delivery
  • Pressure on the raised arms during a breech delivery

The paralysis caused by Erb’s Palsy can be partial or complete depending on the how many nerves were damaged and at what severity. For example, the nerves can be bruised or torn completely.

Although range of motion is recovered in many children under one year in age, individuals who have not yet healed after this point will rarely gain full function in their arm and may develop arthritis. Some babies will recover on their own and some will require special treatment and surgeries.
